Return to Work
Retirees who return to work will continue to receive their VRS retirement benefits unless they return to a position covered under the Virginia Retirement System or return to a non-covered position with the same employer before they have had a bona fide break in service.
VRS-covered employment is any full-time permanent position that provides VRS benefits. Some part-time permanent positions with state agencies and public colleges and universities also are covered under VRS.
Non-covered employment with VRS-participating employers includes temporary, part-time hourly and adjunct faculty positions. Retirees can return to non-covered employment with their former employers and continue receiving retirement benefits provided they have had a break in service of at least 30 days following their effective date of retirement over a period they normally would work.
