If you are unable to perform your job because of a physical or mental disability and the disability is likely to be permanent, you may be eligible to apply for disability retirement through the Virginia Retirement System (VRS).
Employees who qualify for disability retirement and are vested (have five or more years of service) receive a benefit amount that is the higher of:
- the VRS formula amount; or
- the minimum guaranteed benefit.
