Other Programs
You may be eligible for the following benefits in addition to VSDP benefits:
Workers’ Compensation
If you suffer a work-related illness or injury, you must apply for disability under the Virginia Workers' Compensation Act as well as VSDP. You may initiate a claim for VSDP short-term disability benefits while you are awaiting a review of your claim for Workers' Compensation benefits.
Family and Medical Leave Act
Commonwealth of Virginia employees are eligible to take authorized unpaid leave under the federal Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) for certain personal and family situations. Depending on the situation, this leave may be coordinated with unused sick, family and personal leave as well as with VSDP benefits.
Social Security Disability Insurance Benefits
If you are on long-term disability, you must apply for Social Security Disability Insurance benefits. The VSDP third-party administrator will assist you in the application process as well as through the appeal process if your application is denied.
Health Insurance Credit
If you are on long-term disability through VSDP, you may be eligible to apply for the health insurance credit. The health insurance credit is a reimbursement that assists qualified members with the cost of their health insurance coverage and/or Medicare premiums. For more information, go to Health Insurance Credit.
