Paul Timmreck Appointed Board Chair
RICHMOND, Va., March 23—Paul W. Timmreck has been named chair of the Board of Trustees of the Virginia Retirement System (VRS) by Gov. Mark R. Warner. Timmreck, senior vice president for finance and administration at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), has been a member of the board since March 2001. Appointed by the Virginia General Assembly to represent state employees, he served most recently as the vice-chair of the board.
Timmreck has served the Commonwealth of Virginia in a variety of capacities for more than 29 years. In his position at VCU, which he began on August 1, 1996, he oversees operations in budget and finance, human resources, facilities management, administrative information technology and public safety.
“I am honored that Governor Warner has chosen me to serve the members and beneficiaries of this prestigious pension system, recognized nationally for its efficiency and investment strategy,” said Timmreck.
Before joining VCU, Timmreck served as secretary of finance for Governors L. Douglas Wilder and George Allen. During his tenure as finance secretary under Governor Wilder, Financial World magazine on two occasions named Virginia as the best-managed state in the nation. He also served as director of planning and budget for Governors Gerald Baliles and Charles Robb. He came to Virginia in 1975 to take a staff position with the Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission, where he worked for almost five years.
Timmreck is a member of the Capitol Square Planning Council and the Board of the Greater Richmond Chamber of Commerce. At the request of Richmond Mayor and former Governor Wilder, he also recently chaired a committee that prepared a report on the financial condition of the City of Richmond as part of the Mayor’s transition.
Timmreck received his undergraduate and Master of Public Administration degrees from the University of Michigan in 1967 and 1968, respectively. He has been married to his wife, Jennifer, for 33 years and has two children.
