Burton Reappointed to VRS Board
Richmond, VA March 10, 2009 - The General Assembly Joint Rules Committee reappointed Edwin T. Burton, III, Ph.D. to the Virginia Retirement System Board of Trustees to serve a five-year term.
A professor of economics for 39 years, Burton was a member of the Cornell faculty for 11 years and currently is a professor of economics at the University of Virginia, where he has served for 20 years. In addition, Burton worked at a variety of firms on Wall Street, including Smith Barney, Rothschild Financial Services, Inc. and Investment Banking at Interstate Johnson Lane (now part of Wachovia).
Burton was appointed to the VRS Board of Trustees for the first time from 1994 and served through 2001, serving as chairman for four years. He was again appointed in 2004 to a five-year term. During this period, Burton served on a variety of the board’s committees, including the Defined Contribution Plans Advisory Committee, and currently as chair of the Benefits and Actuarial Committee.
VRS provides benefits to more than 349,000 state and local government employees, teachers, judges and law enforcement officers and more than 141,000 retirees and beneficiaries. VRS is the 24th largest public or private pension system in the United States.
