How to Read This Year's MBP

2006 member benefit profile

For tips on reading your MBP, mouse over the graphic: Help buttons in the following sample:

1. VRS Membership DateThis is the date you first became a member of VRS. If you took a refund of a previous VRS-covered position and came back to VRS-covered employment, the date you were re-hired is your membership date.
2. Service RetirementThis section shows the service credit you have earned, purchased or been granted and your projected monthly retirement benefit amounts. Customized messages related to your service credit and benefits also appear here.
3. Unreduced RetirementThis section shows your projected date for full retirement. Your eligibility is based on your service credit and salary as of June 30 as well as the type of retirement plan in which you are enrolled. These include VRS; the State Police Officers' Retirement System (SPORS); the Virginia Law Officers' Retirement System (VaLORS); special benefits for local law enforcement officers and full-time firefighters; and the Judicial Retirement System (JRS).
4. Reduced RetirementThis section shows your projected date for early retirement based on your service credit and salary history as of June 30 and the type of retirement plan in which you are enrolled.
5. Present ValueThis is the estimated amount you can expect over your lifetime in today's dollars. It assumes you will work until your normal retirement age or current age, if over 65, and you retire with an unreduced benefit. It includes cost-of-living adjustments. It is a non-refundable amount that is paid out in monthly payments over your lifetime.
6. Member Contribution AccountThis section shows your member contributions plus interest as of June 30. This is the amount you would receive if you left VRS-covered employment and requested a refund.
7. Group Life Benefits for Natural DeathThe amount of your basic group life natural death benefit is shown in this section. An explanation of your life insurance benefits is included as well.
8. Optional Life Benefits for Natural DeathIf you have purchased additional life insurance coverage for yourself, your spouse and/or your children through the optional life insurance program, the benefit amounts are shown in this section.
