Work-Related Disability
If you have a condition for which you have received or are receiving benefits under the Virginia Workers' Compensation Act and the condition is the primary cause of your disability, you may be eligible to apply for disability retirement through the Virginia Retirement System (VRS).
Members who qualify for a work-related disability retirement benefit and are vested (have five or more years of service) receive a benefit amount that is the higher of:
- the VRS formula amount; or
- the guaranteed benefit. (If a member has fewer than five years of service, he or she is eligible only for the guaranteed benefit.)
Workers' Compensation benefits affect the amount of the VRS disability benefit and other retirement benefits you receive under certain conditions. Consult the Applying for Disability Retirement Booklet for a complete explanation of eligibility requirements and benefits.
