Questions about your deferred member mailing?

The Virginia Retirement System (VRS) recently mailed a notice to deferred members who are not currently employed in a VRS- covered position and not vested.

I am a deferred member with less than five years of service. Can I leave my money at VRS?
Yes. However, with less than five years of VRS service, you are not eligible for a future retirement benefit. If you leave the money in your account, return to a VRS-covered position and become vested, then you become eligible for a retirement benefit.

Can I take a refund of the money in my retirement account?
Yes. Submit a Request for Refund (VRS-3) pdf icon 47kb. Before submitting the form, read the IRS 402(f) – Special Tax Notice pdf icon 28.5kb. However, be aware that if you take a refund and later return to a VRS-covered position, you will be rehired under Plan 2, which has different plan provisionspdf icon 125kb.

How can I find out the amount of money in my account so I can decide if I want a refund?
Your member contribution account earns 4 percent interest, compounded each June 30. To learn about the amount in your account as of June 30, 2010:
