Montgomery Appointed to VRS Board

Joseph MontgomeryRICHMOND, VA April 10, 2014 — The General Assembly Joint Rules Committee appointed Joseph W. Montgomery to a five-year term to the Virginia Retirement System (VRS) Board of Trustees, ending Feb. 2019. He will serve in one of the investment professional positions on the board and succeeds Edwin T. Burton III, Ph.D., whose term expired.

Montgomery is a Managing Director-Investments at Wells Fargo Advisors and heads the Optimal Service Group, specializing in advising high-net-worth individuals and institutions. Montgomery is a Certified Financial Planner, a Certified Portfolio Manager and an Accredited Investment Fiduciary. During his successful 39-year career, Montgomery has been recognized routinely for his exceptional professionalism and his many accomplishments. 

He has been included in Worth magazine’s Top 100 Financial Advisors, and Barron’s placed him on the Top 100 Best Financial Advisors list since its inception in 2004. In addition, Research magazine named him to the Broker Hall of Fame, and On Wall Street magazine recognized him as one of the Ten Best Brokers. He appeared on the Virginia Business list of “Virginia’s Top Wealth Advisors” from 2005 to 2011, appearing in the number one position several years.

In addition to his professional achievements, Montgomery is an active community leader, serving on boards for several Williamsburg, Va., area charities and foundations. He is past President of the Society of the Alumni of the College of William and Mary in Virginia, where he was All America in football. He also served on William & Mary’s Board of Visitors from 1995 until 1999. For six years he served on the Board of the College of William & Mary Endowment.
