Bo Harris

Richmond, VA April 28, 2016 — The General Assembly Joint Rules Committee recently reappointed Wallace G. "Bo" Harris, Ph.D., to a five-year term to the Virginia Retirement System (VRS) Board of Trustees. He will continue to serve in the state employee position on the board.

Harris is an assistant professor and serves as chairman of the graduate human resource management program for the University of Richmond. Harris retired as a Virginia state government employee in 2008 after 36 years of service, 28 of which were served at VRS where he rose to the level of deputy director. He began his state government career in 1972 with the Virginia Department of Taxation and retired from the Department of Social Services in 2008, where he served as deputy commissioner and chief operating officer.

Harris earned his Bachelor of Arts in economics and his Master of Business Administration from the University of Richmond, and his Doctorate in Public Policy and Administration from Virginia Commonwealth University.

VRS serves approximately 673,000 members, retirees and beneficiaries. The active employees include about 148,000 teachers, 106,000 local government employees and about 78,000 state employees. In addition, VRS provides benefits to more than 190,000 retirees and beneficiaries. The retirement system ranks as the 22nd largest public or private pension fund in the U.S.
