Eligible Types of Service
The following types of service periods are eligible for purchase. For additional information, consult the

Military Leave
You may receive service credit at no cost for each occurrence of leave for active duty military service as long as you return to a VRS-covered position within one year of honorable discharge or release from active duty.
Educational Leave
You may purchase up to four years of service credit for any approved educational leave from a VRS-participating employer.
Leave for the Birth or Adoption of a Child
For each birth or adoption, you may purchase the amount of time you were on leave up to one year per occurrence (maximum of four years).
Public Service
You may purchase up to four years of permanent, full-time salaried service from a public employer or public school system of another state or territory in the U.S., or a Virginia public employer that does not participate in VRS.
Federal Civilian Service
You may purchase up to four years of permanent, full-time salaried civilian service from the federal government, including the Peace Corps.
Military Service
You may purchase up to four years of active duty military service if you served full-time for at least 180 consecutive days and were honorably discharged. You also cannot be receiving a retirement benefit for service in the military except the reserves or National Guard.
VRS Refunded Service
If you left a previous VRS-covered position and took a refund of your member contributions, you may purchase all of the refunded service.
If you were employed by a VRS-participating employer in a wage, temporary, contractual or other position that does not provide VRS benefits, you can purchase up to four years of this service.
Non-Ported Service
If you transferred service to VRS from another employer with which VRS has a portability agreement, you may purchase up to four years of any service credit that did not transfer. Contact your human resource office to determine whether you are eligible.
