Updates to Optional Life Insurance Enrollment, Coverage

The Optional Group Life Insurance Program now offers members and their families more flexibility when enrolling and managing coverage. Here’s what’s new:

  • New hires now have 45 days to enroll in optional life insurance without answering health questions, an increase from the previous 30-day window.
  • You can also enroll a spouse or dependent within 45 days of a qualifying event, such as a marriage or the birth of a child, without medical underwriting.
  • Coverage for dependent children now begins at birth, rather than 15 days after birth.
  • A $10,000 benefit is paid in the event you are enrolled in optional life insurance and a child passes away within 31 days of their birth but prior to enrollment.

Optional group life insurance is available to members whose employers participate in the VRS Group Life Insurance Program. It lets you purchase additional coverage for yourself, your spouse and your dependent children. You pay the premiums through payroll deduction.

Visit Securian Financial to enroll, update your coverage or learn more.
