How Do I Prepare for My Upcoming VRS Counseling Appointment?

Make the most of your appointment time by preparing ahead.

What to Review in Advance

Log in to myVRS and take note of the following:

  • Your current service credit total.
  • Your estimated monthly benefit, especially if you’re within a few years of retiring and considering when to apply.
  • Your current beneficiary designations.

With this information, you will have a starting point for your conversation with a VRS counselor.

NOTE

VRS counselors focus on the defined benefit portion of your plan, but having the full picture can help with overall income planning.

If you participate in a VRS defined contribution plan, also log in to your DCP Account and note your balance and current contribution amount. You can access a variety of educational and counseling services regarding these plans through Voya Financial, the record keeper.

What to Bring

  • A notepad. Take time to think about topics you’d like to discuss and write down any questions in advance.
  • A private space to talk (virtual appointment). VRS uses Microsoft Teams for virtual counseling appointments. Your web browser may request to use your microphone and camera, which are required for the session.
  • If you are retiring, a voided check or official bank letter (on letterhead) with your name, account number and routing number to set up your direct deposit.
  • General information about finances outside of your VRS benefits, such as Social Security, individual retirement accounts or other long-term savings, and projected healthcare expenses.
  • Your spouse, if applicable. Spouses are encouraged to attend if you plan to complete your retirement application during the appointment or want them involved in benefit decisions.

What to Expect From Your Session

Your VRS counselor will walk through your specific benefit information, explain your options and answer your questions. Counseling sessions typically last less than an hour. You are welcome to take notes, and you may follow up by phone or email if additional questions come up.

Common topics:

  • Long-term retirement planning.
  • Maximizing benefits through early career choices, such as purchasing prior service.
  • Applying for retirement and choosing a benefit payout option.
  • Coordinating your VRS benefit with Social Security and other savings.
