Virginia Retirement System Recognized for Plan Funding and Administration

RICHMOND November 12, 2025 -

The Public Pension Coordinating Council has recognized the Virginia Retirement System with the 2025 Public Pension Standards Award for Funding and Administration. This honor marks the 22nd consecutive year VRS has earned recognition by PPCC, underscoring its continued commitment to managing a well-funded, efficiently administered retirement system for Virginia’s public employees.

The award is based on standards that serve as a benchmark for public defined benefit plans across the country. VRS met the PPCC’s required funding criteria and satisfied administrative standards in five key areas: comprehensive benefits, actuarial practices, auditing, investments and communications.

The PPCC is a coalition of the National Association of State Retirement Administrators, National Conference on Public Employee Retirement Systems and National Council on Teacher Retirement, which represent more than 500 of the largest U.S. pension plans that serve 18 million state and local government employees.
