William H. Leighty Rejoins VRS Board of Trustees
Gov. Abigail Spanberger recently appointed William H. Leighty to the VRS Board of Trustees. Leighty is a managing partner at DecideSmart LLC in Richmond and brings decades of experience in Virginia state government and public-sector management. He previously served as chief of staff to Governors Mark Warner and Tim Kaine, and also as VRS director and board member.
Be Alert for Unsolicited Counseling Services
VRS has received reports of outside companies contacting retirees by phone or email to offer “retirement counseling” or insurance products. These companies are not affiliated with VRS.
VRS does not make unsolicited calls to offer services, and all benefit counseling is free. Official correspondence arrives by U.S. mail on official letterhead or from a “varetire.org” email address. VRS staff do not come to retirees’ homes to discuss benefits. If you’re unsure whether a communication is legitimate, call VRS directly at 888-827-3847.
Participants in a defined contribution plan may occasionally receive mail from Voya Financial or TIAA, the third-party record keepers for those plans.
Get Your VRS Questions Answered
Whether you’ve been retired for years or just a few months, VRS offers several ways to help you stay informed.
- Start with the VRS website: Find benefit information, your Retiree Handbook and other publications related to your plan. Call VRS at 888-827-3847 with questions about your specific situation.
- Schedule virtual or in-person counseling: Talk one-on-one with a counselor. In-person appointments are held at the VRS Counseling Center at Reynolds Crossing (6641 W. Broad St., Richmond, VA) in suite G106. Book a session that fits your schedule.
- Get DCP support: For questions about a defined contribution account, contact the VRS Defined Contribution Plans Service Center at 877-327-5261 or find your regional DC Plans Education Specialist.
Stay Connected: Where to Update Your Mailing Address and Other Info
Keeping your contact information current protects your online account and ensures timely benefit communications. Update your mailing address, phone number and personal email address through your myVRS account. If you also participate in a VRS defined contribution plan, update your contact information separately in your DCP Account.
Log in at least once every 90 days to keep your online accounts active.
