What to Know About Purchasing Long-Term Care Coverage
Services like nursing home care, assisted living or help with daily activities at home can be expensive, and most health insurance plans don’t cover them. VRS offers the Commonwealth of Virginia Voluntary Group Long Term Care Insurance Program to assist you with these costs.
Why Consider This Coverage?
Long-term care needs can arise suddenly and last for years. Without coverage, expenses can quickly deplete savings or retirement income. This voluntary program offers group rates and flexible options to help protect your finances and give you peace of mind.
Who Can Apply?
You may be eligible if you are a:
- State employee or faculty member working at least 20 hours per week.
- School division or political subdivision employee whose employer participates.
- Vested, deferred VRS member or retiree age 75 or under.
- Retiree of a Virginia public college or university age 75 or under.
Family members such as spouses, adult children, parents and grandparents can also apply if they meet age and underwriting requirements.
- Coverage for nursing home care, assisted living, home health services and more.
- Reduced medical underwriting if you apply within 60 days of employment (age 65 or under).
- Options to increase benefits over time to keep pace with rising care costs.
- Portability — keep your coverage even if you leave or retire.
Already Covered Under VSDP or VLDP?
If you participate in the Virginia Sickness and Disability Program or Virginia Local Disability Program, you already have long-term care coverage at no cost. This voluntary program can supplement that coverage for added protection.
