The Virginia Office of the Attorney General recently recognized Jessica Hood, a member of the VRS Board of Trustees, as one of the 2026 Unsung Heroes for her commitment to public service and tireless advocacy for crime victims across the state.
The Unsung Heroes Award honors those who demonstrate exceptional dedication, leadership and impact in victim services. As the Director of Outreach and Public Relations for the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s office in Wise County and the City of Norton, Hood was nominated for her critical behind-the-scenes support of crime victims, often outside of normal work hours.
Her trauma-informed approach, which prioritizes safety, connection and trust to support victims in the community, has strengthened prosecutions and improved outcomes for them. Most recently, she supported corrections officers following a violent incident.
“Jessica’s recognition speaks to the real-world impact of her service,” VRS Director Patricia Bishop said. “Through her work supporting victims, coordinating across agencies and communicating with clarity and compassion, she strengthens outcomes for Virginians. That commitment and perspective also make her an asset to the VRS Board.”
A lifelong resident of Southwest Virginia, Hood grew up in Wise County and earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Virginia’s College at Wise. She has served on the VRS board since 2023.
